Greenspace Acquisition Strategy

12/03/09 9:56 am

On December 10th, DeKalb County officials will update the public about the county greenspace program at a forum next week.  Please read below and attend the meeting to underscore our need for greenspace resources in District 2. The county has used bond money to buy and improve land for parks and recreation, acquiring more than 3,000 acres since 2001, according to the office of County CEO Burrell Ellis. Little of this land was acquired in District 2.

Officials will discuss the program at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Dr. in Decatur. For more information, call the County Parks Bond and Greenspace Office at 404-371-2082. http://web.co.dekalb.ga.us/Greenspace/default.asp

It is important that District 2 residents attend the meeting to better understand current deficiencies in our area, and the County's options for correcting them.  I described imbalance in previous use of greenspace funding in a July Update (See July 2009 Archives -Funding Inequity Unacceptable)

More recently, the Ellis Administration produced a Parks Master Plan update that confirms the deficiency of greenspace in west-central DeKalb and proposes strategies to correct it.  The Administration's proposals were met with resistance from some member of the Commission.

Please attend this important meeting and voice your support for greenspace acquisitions in west central DeKalb, the most densely populated and most underserved area of the County!
