Commissioners Request Special Grand Jury Investigation of DeKalb Purchasing Scandal

06/18/08 9:51 pm

I thought you might be interested in knowing that last week Commissioners Gannon and Boyer signed on to a letter I drafted which requested that the District Attorney and Superior Court review and order a Grand Jury investigation into the DeKalb purchasing scandal.

The conclusions of the forensic audit, the management audit and the March-April Term DeKalb County Grand Jury all indicate that further investigation is necessary to fully resolve unanswered questions.  I believe that such an investigation is essential to restoring public confidence in the county’s management of taxpayer funds, but is beyond the capacity of the Board of Commissioners to accomplish.

The judicial branch, namely the Superior Courts and District Attorney are equipped to undertake this investigation.  This model was effective in the investigation of the 2006 police shootings, and did much to clear the air in that highly charged matter.  I believe that such an investigation would have a similar effect in this case.
