DeKalb County to Host Senior Olympic Games

CEO Michael Thurmond will light the ceremonial torch during the kickoff event which also will feature the DeKalb Mobile Market, various screenings by Kaiser Permanente Mobile, Wii bowling, a fun walk and exercise demonstrations. Additionally, there will be a DeKalb County services expo and representatives from MARTA will be on hand.

Hosted by the DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, the Olympic-style sports festival provides seniors, ages 50 and older, an opportunity to compete in a variety of sports, including free-throw basketball, bowling, golf, horseshoes, track and field, billiards, swimming, table tennis and water volleyball.

Participants are encouraged to compete as a team or enter individual events. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event. Seniors needing special assistance regarding transportation should call MARTA Mobility at (404) 848-5389. 

The DeKalb County Senior Olympic Games, which is open to all residents of DeKalb County as well as residents from surrounding counties, is part of National Older Americans Month, celebrated in May.

DeKalb County Public Library, Office of Senior Affairs; Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs department; Lou Walker Senior Center; Central Senior Center; and Decatur Active Living have collaborated and planned a month of programs and activities for DeKalb’s seniors.
