 Public Works Update for 06/30/2005
 Jun 30, 2005
Construction Projects:

Fidelis Ogbu, the Transportation Division staff, and the two on-call contractors (Galaxy and Tople) have finished more than half of the new sidewalk projects in the 2005 HOST Infrastructure program. In District 2, work is complete with the new sidewalks on the south side of Dresden Drive, from Plaza Fiesta to Buford Highway.

Ginarc, the contractor for the annual wheelchair ramp construction contract, finished the initial 168 locations given to them, and were given an additional 18 sites to complete in July, based on the final available funding for 2005 for ramp installations.

The Briarwood at North Fork Peachtree Creek bridge replacement, being constructed by C W Matthews Contracting, is about 40% complete; it is slightly behind schedule, due to utility conflicts, for its December 2005 contract completion date.

Buford Highway sidewalks and safety improvements, from Shallowford Terrace to I-285; the right-of-way acquisition process is also completed! PBSJ staff acquired all 110 parcels needed for sidewalk installation, so this project too will be bid by GDOT in their August 2005 letting.

Ponce de Leon Avenue at Hambrick, and Ponce de Leon Avenue at McLendon; turn lane construction and signal upgrades to improve traffic safety and efficiency; right-of-way acquisition by the County is underway. The critical path issue will be CSX Railroad execution of right-of-way documents. The projects are both currently on schedule to bid by GDOT in January 2006.

The Construction and Maintenance crews at Water/Sewer installed over 6171 feet of replacement water mains recently and will be working on Desmond Drive as well.

The contracted water main replacement work, being done by Materials & Metals Engineers, Inc.,have completed work on Laurel Ridge Drive and Mount Olive Drive. They have also been working on replacing a water main on North Druid Hills Court; we initially received some complaints about landscaping/restoration concerns and erosion control issues on this project, but they seem to have been resolved.

The 2nd Quarter 2005 Storm Water Utility critical projects; The largest project in this quarter's program, a replacement box culvert for Nesbitt Drive, is about 50% complete, on schedule for being finished in late July.

Recognition:
Thanks go to Dan Hall and all the Sanitation, Roads & Drainage and Water & Sewer employees involved in securing over $472,000 in reimbursements from FEMA and GEMA for expenses incurred by the County in overtime, disposal costs and equipment expenses related to the Ivan Tropical Storm last September 2004. Your diligent efforts in pursuing these reimbursements obviously help our bottom line, and if we don't pursue them through appropriate channels with the state and federal agencies, other jurisdictions will!

Thanks everyone for another good month,

Ted Rhinehart
