| Public Works Update for March, 2005 |
| Mar 24, 2005 |
Roads & Drainage crews are 98% complete with the new sidewalk on Fair Oaks Road from Oak Grove to Timberland. There are just a few feet of sidewalk remaining, by the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, which is held up by a utility pole relocation; and they have completed 1 of the 3 retaining walls along the sidewalk.
The Briarwood at North Fork Peachtree Creek bridge replacement, being constructed by C W Matthews Contracting, is about 30% complete; BellSouth is moving the remainder of its facilities, and Atlanta Gas Light has a gas main to relocate before work can start on the new storm drainage system. The subcontractor for the water and sewer line relocations should start this week, and then work can start on Wall #2 on the new bridge; it is on schedule for a December 2005 contract completion date.
Buford Highway sidewalks and safety improvements, from Shallowford Terrace to I-285; the right-of-way acquisition process is wrapping up; we have secured about 80 of the 110 parcels needed for sidewalk installation; the Board approved 7 condemnations in February for this project, and we will have another several condemnations to process in March and April; then final plans will be submitted to the DOT to bid in June 2005.
The Construction and Maintenance crews at Water/Sewer this last month have installed about 4375 feet of replacement water mains and the associated sterilization and meter change-overs on Jett Drive, Clay Drive, Eula Circle, Deacon Lane, and Parsons Drive, and are now completing final restoration/landscaping along those streets.
The largest project in this quarter's program, a replacement box culvert for Nesbitt Drive, is starting this week; it will require a crane and excavator on site to set the boxes, which weigh several tons each.
The Board of Commissioners approved Sanitation Division moving forward with the proposed voluntary subscription-based curbside recycling program for residential customers. In the next 90 to 120 days, Sanitation will take bids on the plastic recycling containers, so that the program can kick off around July or August 2005; residents will pay $25 per year for the Wednesday pickups, as well as $15 one-time for the bin, and $15 for a box of 100 blue bags for plastic/glass/metal containers. The Keep DeKalb Beautiful program will assist Sanitation in marketing and promoting the program in the next few months.
Efficiency Congratulations to the Roads & Drainage staff for receipt of a check from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency for over $2.5 million for flood-prone home buyouts. GEMA stated that this was the largest grant check in the Georgia program's history, and is the first installment in over $3 million in grant funds received by the County for the 2004 home buyout program, which addressed 22 flood-prone homes. |
