In an ongoing effort to provide congestion relief to motorists, the Georgia Department of Transportation is installing ramp meters on the interstate and several major state routes throughout metro Atlanta. Ramp meters are used to control the flow of traffic onto the interstate. They are also designed to reduce peak traffic congestion and have been used for more than 20 years in numerous cities throughout the United States. The first phase of Ramp Meter activation will occur over the next 30 days. Once the activation date is determined, the Ramp Meters will be operational prior to the onset of morning and evening rush hours and will be monitored by cameras at the ramps. These cameras are part of Georgia DOT’s large, computer-operated Intelligent Transportation System housed at the Transportation Management Center. Georgia DOT is committed to sharing important construction project information with you. We will continue to provide updates during the process so that motorists can make well-informed decisions when traveling these corridors. Please direct your questions about ramp meters to the District Office at 770-986-1001. The first corridor to become operational will be I-285 on the north side of Atlanta between Northside Drive and Buford Highway. We will continue to activate Ramp Meters in phases during the next year in the other corridors. We will inform you via email of ramp meter activation progress as the dates are confirmed for the specific corridors listed below. We intend to have all 166 meters operating by summer 2009. Ramp Meters will eventually be located on I-20, I-75, I-85, I-285, I-575, US 78 and State Route 400.
