| WATER CONSERVATION |
| Aug 24, 2007 |
Did you know that the population of DeKalb County grows by approximately 934 people per month? Did you know that in 2007, we are already using water at the rate projected for the year 2010?
Rapid population growth, urban development, the tri-state water wars, pollution and environmental degradation, the current drought and waste have combined to exert tremendous stress on Georgia's water resources. To date, this year's rain deficiency is over 14" and growing worse each day. Water conservation is no longer a choice, it is a necessity!
What can you do? Here are some water conservation tips from the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management.
Bathroom *avoid unnecessary flushes (the EPA lists the toilet as the largest single water user in homes) *take shorter showers *don't run water while shaving or brushing teeth Kitchen *wash only full loads in the dishwasher and laundry *fill the sink with water rather than run water from the tap while washing fruits and vegetables *don't run water to defrost meat or other frozen foods Outdoors *follow water use restrictions *mulch trees and plants to retain moisture *don't run the hose while washing your car
As part of their ongoing water conservation efforts, the Department of Watershed Management is providing complimentary low-flow retrofit kits to citizens whose homes were built prior to 1992. Low-flow household fixtures are much more efficient, for example a pre 1992 toilet uses over three gallons more than a low-flow fixture available today.
